Social Networking and Social Media – what is the difference?

Before we define the difference between the term social media and social networking, lets look at before we had the internet, can you remeber back then?  We we still had a people network then which could be called a Social Network.  This is people you know you may meet in the street and some of them your would also call freinds.  They can be very influencial if you need help, advice or even perhaps new business contacts.

Since the arrival of the internet in 1982 and more recently the term social media, our people networks now can go online.  The following video explains the concept well.

As we move our people networks online, along came the term Social Networking and Social Media.  So what is the difference?  Many people interchange the terms.

Social e two terms interchangeably, you can separate them and the websites that represent one or another or even both effectively.

Social Networking can be defined as an online service or platform for connecting social networks or social relations among people.

Social Media is a more braod tearm, refering to the media that delivers Scoial Netwroking and the strageyused for interations online

You can parse out the word Social from Media and Networking in each term. Social Media can be called a strategy and an outlet for broadcasting, while Social Networking is a tool and a utility for connecting with others. Essentially, you can lump both terms together under the umbrella of Web 2.0.
